All-Party Parliamentary Group publishes our report into Connectivity and Left Behind Areas

We’re thrilled to see such a positive response to the recently published report on Connectivity and ‘Left Behind’ areas that we, in partnership with Local Trust and The Campaign For Better Transport, put together for the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG).

The APPG for ‘left behind’ neighbourhoods is a cross party group of MPs and Peers. It is committed to improving social and economic outcomes for residents living in ‘left behind’ neighbourhoods.

Our work for the All-Party Parliamentary Group focuses on taking a deeper dive into data on a set of socio-economic themes to explore how ‘left-behind’ neighbourhoods compare to other similar deprived areas on specific challenges and which ‘left-behind’ experience the highest level of need on these challenges. The Connecting communities: improving transport to get ‘left behind’ neighbourhoods back on track looks specifically at challenges around the connectedness in these areas.

Local Trust commissioned us and Campaign for Better Transport to explore how the physical disconnection of certain communities has accelerated the disconnect felt by those living in these communities and the impact it has had on their lives. The report highlights how enhancing connectivity and access to the public services many of us take for granted, is key to improving employment opportunities and outcomes for many of the residents. Our work resulted in a bespoke composite indicator of connectivity – the combined connectivity measure. This ranked wards in England in terms of whether residents have access to key services within reasonable travelling distance and how good public transport and local infrastructure is alongside the strength of the local job market. By looking at these indicators in detail and imposing other data sets over them we hoped to inform a better understanding of ‘left behind’ areas, what impact being ‘left behind’ has on residents and how to better tackle the issues highlighted.
