Definition

A county is a geographical and administrative division of England, Scotland, Wales, or Northern Ireland, used for local governance, statistical analysis, and ceremonial purposes. In England, counties are classified as ceremonial counties (for cultural and historical recognition) and administrative counties (governed by county councils or unitary authorities). Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland have distinct local government structures, with historic counties often retained for heritage and postal purposes.
